Camp Our Time
WHY CAMP OUR TIME? Since its inception, Our Time has performed across the United States and abroad. During its travels, Our Time has consistently been greeted with huge enthusiasm, along with the eager inquiries of kids and their parents, asking how they too can share the experience of being in Our Time. Camp Our Time addresses this need.
CAMP OUR TIME'S MISSION
Camp Our Time is open to young people who stutter, as well as their siblings. The mission of Camp is twofold: to provide a fun, supportive, and beautiful environment where young people who stutter can express themselves in their own time without the fear of being ridiculed and also to serve the important function of teaching their siblings who do not stutter how to better support their brothers and sisters.
By opening this opportunity to siblings of young people who stutter, Camp brings the siblings closer together and fosters greater understanding between them. In all Camp activities, the standard Our Time principals are applied: everyone has as much time as they need to speak. No one is rushed, teased, put-down, or cut-off. Campers gain the confidence they need to be successful in the upcoming school year and beyond, regardless of the way they speak.
Camp Our Time is an environment where campers' voices and ideas are heard and validated.
OVERVIEW OF CAMP OUR TIME
Camp Our Time will be held August 10th-17th, 2008. It is a sleep away arts camp for young people who stutter and their siblings, ages 8-15. Camp Our Time takes place at the beautiful Iroquois Springs in Rock Hill, New York, 90 minutes from New York City (www.iroquoissprings.com). Under the guidance of professional artists, Camp Our Time offers kids the opportunity to write, compose, choreograph, and perform original plays, music, and dances. At the conclusion of Camp Our Time, the campers present their original material at a performance for family and friends. In addition to these activities, Camp Our Time offers the kids a chance to play sports such as tennis, basketball, swimming, softball, volleyball, soccer, and more.
Iroquois Springs is a 120-acre campground, cradled in the beauty of the Southern Catskills. The facilities include a ropes course, a spring-fed lake, an NCAA lighted and heated pool, a Field House, a movie theater, nine tennis courts, two lighted roller hockey arenas, an indoor gymnastics center and an amphitheater. All campers sleep in modern, well-appointed cabins equipped with electricity and a bathroom with showers.
There is a fee for young people to attend Camp Our Time. However, scholarships are available and no one is turned away because of a lack of funds. This is a key element to the success of Camp Our Time as it fosters understanding, acceptance, and friendship among a diverse group of people.
